Liverpool went close to levelling on a number of occasions, but were denied by saves from Kepa Arrizabalaga.

Klopp on team selection

Liverpool have made seven changes for tonight's fixture - and Jürgen Klopp has been explaining his thinking behind the decision.

Virgil van Dijk, Andy Robertson, Fabinho and Sadio Mane have retained their places from Saturday in an otherwise much-changed Reds team.

Klopp said: “First of all, it’s because we can – because we have the players for it. I wanted a team who is naturally looking forward to this game, counting days pretty much and going into the tie and giving everything. And fresh legs. We want quality, we want positivity, we want a lot of things.

"We could have had that maybe in a different line-up as well, I’m not sure, but I decided for this and I’m really happy with it, to be honest。 I like the team。 Let’s get ready for the game。”

Frank Lampard's programme notes

The Chelsea boss is hoping his players can secure a positive result against the European champions after two attempts earlier in the campaign.

"We've had two really close games with them already this season – well-contested matches, firstly in the Super Cup and then here in the league," Lampard writes.

"Even though, ultimately, we lost those games, we certainly matched them in a football sense and showed that we can compete with them when we're at our best. So this is a third chance for us to get a result against them.

"They've been the best team in the land this season and the fact their defeat to Watford on Saturday was such a surprise is a credit to the standards they've set this season, so we should expect the same strong Liverpool we've seen all year。"

  • Liverpool have scored in 22 of the last 25 encounters with Chelsea home and away in all competitions
  • This will be Klopp's first game in the fifth round of the FA Cup. In his 13 previous matches in this competition he has given playing time to 68 players
  • Mo Salah is one goal short of becoming the first Reds player since Michael Owen in 2002-03 to score 20 times for the club in three successive seasons in all competitions. Sadio Mane needs three to achieve the feat.

Will Minamino feature?

The boss was asked about a potential opportunity for January signing Takumi Minamino this evening, at his pre-match press conference。

He replied: "We have to make a decision: do we talk about the line-up or not? I decided we don't talk about the line-up and that means we cannot talk about single players.

"All fit players are in contention – that obviously includes Taki as well. If you tell me the Chelsea line-up, I will give you our line-up.

"I don't want to gamble with it or whatever, line-ups are decisive and as long as we don't know anything about the opponent, we cannot give anything away. That's how it is."

Lampard: Liverpool 'out on their own' this season

Frank Lampard was asked about Liverpool's loss at Watford and the effect it may have on the Premier League leaders tonight during his pre-match press conference。

The Chelsea boss said: "They have become relatively human for one game. It can happen in this Premier League, which is incredibly competitive. It shows how well they have done in the last year or so, particularly this season.

"Liverpool have just had a couple of results like the rest of us do。 They’ve been out on their own this season。 It has been an incredible feat from Jürgen Klopp and the whole squad and they have just become slightly normal。"
